plenity review - 13 things you need to know
there are only a handful of medications approved for weight-loss by the food and drug administration. in late 2019, plenity was added onto the short-list of approved weight-loss prescriptions, so our team decided to look into the product.
our research team went over the product’s release date, potential prices, ingredients, potential side effects, and more. after, they gathered the important facts to give you the bottom line on this new prescription medication.
plenity can be purchased through their official site.
what is plenity?
plenity is an fda-cleared tool for managing weight that’s made from naturally occurring elements. its purpose is to assist adults dealing with excess weight or obesity, specifically those with a body mass index (bmi) ranging from 55 to 88 pounds (25 to 40 kg/㎡), when combined with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
this weight management solution, taken before meals, operates by targeting the gastrointestinal tract, promoting a sensation of fullness. it’s noteworthy that plenity is non-systemic, meaning it concentrates solely on the gastrointestinal system rather than affecting the entire body. according to the manufacturer’s claims, when you ingest the capsule, it is designed to help you eat less and lose weight by making you feel fuller. plenity works by absorbing the water consumed with it and interacting with the food you eat, leading to a prolonged feeling of satiety throughout the day.
formerly available only through prescription, plenity was accessible via the roman telehealth platform, where individuals could connect with healthcare providers for assessment and treatment if deemed appropriate. however, the manufacturer has discontinued plenity, as indicated on the roman website.
its benefits have been proven in clinical studies, and it seems easy to use, and this is what a few of them have to say:
- endotext: research into plenity found that the product could help cause between 5-8% weight loss in certain individuals.
- therapeutic advances in gastrointestinal endoscopy: this study found that “the pilot study on 128 non-diabetic overweight patients showed that plenity 2.25 g twice daily was associated with significant weight loss compared to the placebo group.”
- gastroenerology & hepatology: plenity works by making individuals feel fuller and cause a reduction in eating.

plenity claims
plenity claims to help users feel more full naturally, meaning you will eat less and lose more weight. combined with diet and exercise, the medication claims to be a clear way toward weight management from natural ingredients.
on the official gelesis website, studies for the medication found clinically meaningful weight loss from the product. the manufacturers claim these studies prove the effectiveness of the medication.
plenity ingredients
plenity, an oral weight loss gel capsule, is only made up of cellulose and citric acid. these two ingredients create a 3d hydrogel matrix. once the product enters the stomach, the matrix breaks apart into individual cells.
these individual cells are designed to hold 100 times their weight. one study published in obesity (silver spring) found that hydrogels be associated with weight loss
does plenity work?
plenity says all its ingredients are natural with no synthetic properties. however, the product is non-systemic, meaning the ingredients are designed only to target a specific area. in this case, plenity only targets the gastrointestinal system.
the two natural ingredients – cellulose and citric acid – create a three-dimensional property to cause you to feel fuller and quicker at mealtime. these ingredients take up space in the stomach and small intestine, giving you the feeling of fullness throughout the day.
the formula can hydrate 100 times their original weight, and once the particles enter the colon, the water reabsorbs back into the body. they are then moved out of the body with bowel movements, according to research published in the annals of pharmacotherapy.
additionally, one animal study published in the jod noted that cellulose was associated with reduced body weight gain.
plenity and weight loss
plenity is one of the very few medications approved by the fda for weight loss, according to endotext. as such, the product has needed to undergo some studies to prove its effectiveness, including ones published in the medical letter on drugs and therapeutics and the ada.
according to the statistics shared on the official gelesis website, 59% of the study participants had a clinically significant response to the prescription. these individuals lost an average of 10% of their body weight, and 26% of the group were classified as “super-responders” that lost at least 14% of their body weight.
another study in obesity: a research journal found that gelesis100 – the absorbent hydrogel in the formula, was safe and tolerable for human health.
plenity side effects
the plenity pill notes some of the adverse reactions that were in the original study. these side effects include:
- abdominal distension
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- diarrhea
- flatulence
- infrequent bowel movements
- nausea
however, everyone will react differently. it is important to discuss possible options and side effects with your doctor.
who is eligible for a plenity prescription?
plenity has plenty of safety information available on their website. to get a prescription, individuals must consult with one or their doctors online through the plenity login.
you should avoid the product if you are allergic to cellulose, citric acid, sodium stearyl fumarate, gelatin, or titanium dioxide. you should also stay away from the medication if you are pregnant.
the product is only designed to be used by individuals with a bmi of 25 – 40. to avoid problems with plenity absorbing other medications, make sure to follow the food intake recommendations.
currently, plenity is not available for residents of florida and virginia.

plenity recommends using the 20 minutes before your meal to plan your food and practice mindfulness.

i have been on plenity for a month and have not lost any weight. first, in order for the capsules to work you must also decrease your calorie intake by 300 cal per day. if one does that they could lose 1 to 2 pounds without spending an outrageous amount of money. i was stupid and ordered the 3 month supply @ 248.00 seeing i wanted to lose 17 to 20 pounds which would take 3 months to achieve. i will say i felt fuller during mealtime, however, it doesn’t last long enough throughout the day. i also play pickleball 5 days a week for at least 2 hours a day.
doesn’t work. my feet swelled up. don’t buy

i will state what others have said – it doesn’t work. don’t spend your hard-earned money on a useless product.
it doesn’t work at all. it is suppose to make you feel fuller . what a waste of money
where can i find a coupon for plenity ?
i dropped of my prescription at the pharmacy and it’s $138. i haven’t been able to find coupon online
you may be able to get a cheaper price through getroman.com – the official website for plenity. their cheapest price is $83/month when you order a 3-month supply or $98/month as a 1-month supply. hope this helps! summer

plenity has been working for me. i take it as directed and have noticed that i don’t finish my meals because i feel full. i have had no side effects and am down 7 pounds in 1 week. the weight loss is from eating 3 meals a day with a protein serving at every meal, exercising 5 days a week, including vegetables at meals, and of course, eating less but feeling full with plenity.

i tried plenity and it did nothing for me. i’m not a happy customer. very expensive product that has no results. don’t waste your money.

im sad its so restricted towards people with a bmi of 25-40 only. mine is 41.5 and i was denied. i was so hopeful, surgery isn’t the best option for some people and this seemed like it could be the next best thing. hoping my husband has better luck.

i just want to know why we can only get it online, if it’s fda approved why can’t my doctor order it from the pharmacy for me?
hello karen. according to their official website, plenity says individuals do not need to see an in-person doctor to gain a prescription for the weight-loss supplement. individuals can complete a consultation online to get the medication. however, it seems like the only way to purchase the product is through their website, which plenity claims is because their product is in short supply.
earnest pearson
i would love to try the product. they stated it was for people with a bmi over 40 and mine is. the dr that denied the product stated that my bmi has to be over 40, and i was denied. i had my bmi calculated on their site. i don’t understand why i was denied the product. i guess after the dr saw my photo he decided that he didn’t won’t to serve my race. that is the only reason i can come up with why he denied helping me to acquire a better quality of life. when he stated that my bmi was not 40. they even state on the site that it was for people that had between 25>40 bmi.
hi earnest. i’m sorry you’ve had this experience. i’m sure there was a miscommunication somewhere, but plenity is not approved for men or women with a bmi higher than 40. so, healthcare providers are only prescribing it for patients with a bmi under 40. i hope this helps. have a great day!
you can count it a blessing and 100.00 in your pocket it doesn’t work it’s crap
